In 1983, John Schnatter delivered his last campus pizza, picked up his business degree from Ball State University, and went home to Jeffersonville, Indiana. There, at age 22, he knocked down the broom closet in his father's tavern, installed an oven and began delivering pizza out of the back of the bar.

From day one, John believed he could make a better traditional pizza by using fresh dough and superior-quality ingredients. Today, Papa John's boasts more than 3,800 restaurants worldwide.

Papa John's International became a public company on June 8, 1993.

1.55 million shares were issued at $13.00 per share (3.49 million shares at $5.78 per share, adjusted for stock splits).

There was a 3-for-2 stock split to stockholders of record on March 12, 1996.
There was another 3-for-2 stock split to stockholders of record on November 8, 1996.
There was a 2-for-1 stock split to stockholders of record on December 23, 2005.

The company's additional offerings were as follows:

• January 1994 - 910,000 shares at $26.25 per share (4.10 million shares at $5.83 per share, adjusted for stock splits)
• November 1994 - 450,000 shares at $30 per share (2.02 million shares at $6.66 per share, adjusted for stock splits)
• August 1995 - 800,000 shares at $40 per share (3.6 million shares at $8.89 per share, adjusted for stock splits)
• May 1996 - 1.14 million shares at $47.25 per share (5.14 million shares at $10.50 per share, adjusted for stock splits)

As of December 2012, there were approximately 18,800 employees.
